About W.McClure

At the heart of what we do is a simple idea, to treat people how we would like to be treated, with service and choice as the basis for all our relationships. Founded in 1945 by Bill McClure, McClures is now in the hands of his son Keith and grandsons Ben and Matthew. Things have changed a bit in the seventy years since Bill sold Morecambe Bay shrimps from his hand cart in Kendal, but Bill’s values and belief in people have remained. Bill himself worked in the business until he retired…at ninety. You can see into our past here.

Nowadays our modern fleet of over thirty vehicles are a far cry from Bill’s cart. He couldn’t have imagined his business would be responsible for over one hundred and fifty employees, help 1,200 customers with over 4,000 lines of produce and make thousands of deliveries every year.

Values Behind Our Decisions

Our family business values of service, innovation and choice are behind every decision we make. They are why we make it easy for you to order with us, seven days a week. They are why we deliver to you six days a week. They are why we are constantly sourcing new products for you. Our family has been well looked after by Cumbria and we continue to look after our region by championing local suppliers and produce and re-investing in our community.

Since 1945 the world has changed a lot; we have changed with and sometimes ahead of it. However, we don’t believe in change for the sake of it. You can still speak to a real person when you place an order or ask a question. Listening to what you need is at the heart of our values of service and choice. As such, our business is constantly evolving, and sustainably striving for better. We hope to be serving a new generation of customers in seventy more years time.

The relationships we have with our suppliers and customers are just as strong as they were in the 1940s. Listening to our customers keeps us innovative and trusting our suppliers ensures we are always delivering the best of what’s in season. My dad believed that buying local strengthened the local economy, kept our community unique, reduced environmental impact, created more jobs and gave people better service. We still believe that today.

McClures Heritage

In 1945 Bill McClure began selling Morecambe Bay shrimps from his hand-cart in Kendal. He couldn’t have known then but his values of customer service and choice were laying the foundations for a business which is now one of the 1000 Companies to Inspire Britain; in the hands of his son and grandsons, and today is serving new generations of many of his original customers.
